Shillong: The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) will begin holding two Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Board Examinations annually starting from the 2024-2025 academic session.
This decision was approved by the state Cabinet on Friday, following amendments to the MBoSE Regulation for the Secondary School Certificate Examination, 2011.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, speaking after the Cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence, stated that the primary board examination will take place in February-March 2025, followed by a supplementary examination in May 2025. This change allows students who fail in two or three subjects during the main examination to reappear in the supplementary exam within a two-month span.
Starting from the 2025-2026 academic session, the main SSLC examination will be conducted in December, with the supplementary exam held in February-March of the following year. This shift aims to prevent students from losing an entire academic year due to exam failures.
“This decision is in the best interest of the students,” said Minister Sangma. “By conducting the supplementary board examination within the same academic session, we ensure that students do not waste a year of their academic career.”

The Education Minister announced that starting from the 2026-2027 academic session, there will be significant changes to the exam structure.
Optional subjects and the “best of five” evaluation system will be eliminated, requiring students to pass all six subjects in the board examination.
