Shillong: In a proactive measure, the Meghalaya government announced on Monday its decision to impose a curfew along the international border with Bangladesh from 6 PM to 6 AM daily until the situation improves.
This curfew will be enforced up to 200 meters inside Indian territory from the zero line. Meghalaya shares approximately 444 km of its border with Bangladesh.
The decision follows the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which prompted the Meghalaya government to urgently convene a meeting with the IG BSF, DGP, Chief Secretary, and other senior officials.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong urged residents in the affected areas to cooperate with the government. “We don’t yet know the situation in Bangladesh, so we request all citizens in the border areas to cooperate and be ready for any information. The state government and BSF are there for the people,” said Tynsong.
He informed that the BSF has been requisitioned, with about nine battalions currently guarding the border. The Government of India is also prepared to deploy more paramilitary forces if needed. “As of today, there is no shortage of manpower for guarding the international border in Meghalaya,” Tynsong assured.

The state government has instructed the BSF to collaborate with traditional village institutions near the border while imposing the curfew to avoid any disturbances.
“We also urge residents at the international border to inform authorities if they notice any illegal entries,” Tynsong added.
