Tura: South West Garo Hills (SWGH) police on Monday evening said while there have been no arrests made in the physical and sexual assault cases of two minor girls near the Chenga Benga Mela, they are close to identifying a few of those that may have been involved.
On Apr 17, at around 9:30 PM, a gang of at least close to 10 persons, allegedly hailing from nearby Assam, sexually assaulted two minor girls as well as physically assaulted their male friends before fleeing from the spot. The disoriented minors, despite the physical and mental trauma suffered during the incident, bravely made their way back home before at least 3 FIRs were filed by the victims at the Ampati PS on April 18.
While one of the girls was beaten unconscious and was not aware of how many people were involved in the assault, the other minor, who remained conscious during the assault, informed of multiple perpetrators.
Some social media posts even alleged the involvement of over 20 persons in the same gang that perpetrated the crime against the two minors and their minor friends.
Following the FIR, SWGH district police began their investigation.
“We have identified our line of investigation and are coordinating with Assam police to round up the suspects. Many people have been questioned and we are hopeful of a breakthrough soon,” informed district SP, Vikas Yadav.

The sensational case has shaken the entire Garo Hills with many calling for immediate action against those involved in the heinous act.
BJP spokesperson and Tura MDC, Bernard Marak has condemned the incident and sought support for the victims.
