Shillong: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla voiced apprehensions regarding the escalating prevalence of hate politics and the lack of mutual respect among opponents during the Lok Sabha Elections in the state.
Addressing media personnel, Shylla emphasised the importance of mutual respect among candidates, expressing dismay over the trend of candidates resorting to mudslinging and spreading falsehoods for political gain.
For the first time in the state, the Lok Sabha Elections witnessed positive participation during public meetings, leading to an increase in voter turnout to 77.60 percent. However, the Election Department received several complaints, and FIRs were registered.
“If I speak evil against my opponent, it shows that I’m perfect, but we all know that we’re not perfect. That’s why I feel respect each other is utmost important not only towards the candidate but towards the public as well,” said Shylla.
He urged aspiring candidates to avoid engaging in hate politics and making false promises to garner votes. Shylla said, “We saw some parties resorting to mudslinging but what saddens me is that spreading lies just to gain sympathy and votes to win elections”.

Shylla emphasised the importance of honesty and integrity in politics, asserting,
“Promising something which is not achievable and delivered is incorrect and it is like fooling the public…It’s better to be honest what is your view and mission so that you can do the best for the voters. By making false promises that is dirty game we play with the public. So let’s hope that the best candidate win.”
