TURA: The Garo Students Union, Karukol Regional Unit in South Garo Hills has expressed strong opposition to the stone quarry being proposed at Nokatgre village in the same district.
The union strongly opposed the proposed stone quarry because of the site being near the popular Re’nang Dare or Falls, said to be the highest waterfall in Garo Hills. The union voiced its strong opposition following a visit to the site with villagers on Sunday.
“The people of Garo Hills do not want to witness the amount of damage done to this exquisite Waterfall just because of this Stone-quarrying…(we) deliver this unambiguous message to the district administrator and MLA Rakkam A. Sangma to to look into this serious matter that poses a threat to the exquisite Waterfall,” it said.
According to the union, permission for the stone quarry was given by the nokma as he was unaware of the huge impact it would have on the waterfall or that some portions of the area would also be included.
“Earlier, the Nokma had given land to operate the stone quarry at a particular place which was quite far from the areca nut plantations but today we came to know that the area proposed for stone quarrying covers all the areas of areca nut plantations. Therefore, we have made a firm commitment that the mining should be stopped at any cost,” the Union said, cautioning that the whole mountain would be destroyed if the activity is allowed.
Meanwhile, the union has also called on the government to save the areas’ rivers like Rongdik and others from sand mining.

Expressing strong opposition against the sand mining being done at Dalenggitim, Nengkong and Emangre, the union urged the government to stop all forms of sand mining activities to save the rivers.
