Shillong: The garbage fiasco in Jowai, Meghalaya, has left several citizens along with legislators disappointed. Lahkmen Rymbui, the Amlarem MLA, called the situation disappointing and said it was not about blaming each other.
“Since 2019 I have said that the next problem in our everyday life especially in the urban areas is water and garbage. How to address this issue is sensitive,” mentioned Rymbui.
He suggested a landfill away from habitation and the river and finding ways to reuse the garbage.
Rymbui said in Shillong and every other district, blue and green buckets have been given for residents to segregate their waste.
“But the reality is that people are not using those buckets and continue to dump garbage using plastic. Instead, the buckets are used to store rice or other essentials,” said Rymbui.
He added that people are only bothered about keeping their households clean but not their surroundings.
