One killed during security operation in Churachandpur

Churachandpur: One person was reportedly killed during a security operation carried out by the CRPF’s CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit at North Songkong village under Henglep sub-division in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday.

According to sources, CoBRA personnel have been conducting extensive combing operations across the Henglep sub-division since June 15 in search of non-Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups. The operations reportedly involved the use of drones and explosive devices in several locations.

Sources alleged that security personnel opened fire during the operation, killing a man identified as Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip of Kolchung village. He reportedly died on the spot.

It was further alleged that security forces took away the body following the operation.

There was no official statement from the CRPF or any other security agency at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip strongly condemned the incident, describing the reported killing as shocking and deeply disturbing.

In a statement, the legislator alleged that Lenminsang was killed by joint security forces at North Songkong village. He said the incident raises serious concerns and undermines public trust in institutions tasked with ensuring citizens’ safety.

Haokip also referred to eyewitness accounts alleging that after the shooting, the deceased’s clothes were removed and his body was taken away by security personnel.

The MLA further said eyewitnesses alleged that attempts were made to portray the incident as a fake encounter. If proven true, he said, such actions would constitute a grave abuse of authority and a serious violation of the rule of law.

Haokip demanded the immediate recovery and handover of the mortal remains to the family, a thorough judicial and independent inquiry into the incident, and stringent action against those found responsible.

He also said that any attempt to conceal facts, tamper with evidence or misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the death must be investigated and dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
