Imphal: AS Arthur, a former minister and veteran leader from the Tangkhul Naga community, has reportedly passed away in Delhi after a prolonged illness on Saturday morning. He was 99.

According to family sources, Arthur breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in the national capital at around 4:40 am.

He was the father of Alfred Kanngam Arthur, the current Member of Parliament from the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency.

A veteran leader from Shangshak Phunghon village in Ukhrul district, Arthur played a key role in Manipur’s political landscape during the 1980s and 1990s.

He was the MLA from Ukhrul Assembly Constituency from 1984 to 1989. Later, he served as Minister for Forest & Environment and General Administration from 1994 to 1997.

Arthur also served as Special Secretary in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly before entering active politics.

A condolence service for the late leader is scheduled to be held at 7 pm today at Dwaar Centre, Safdarjung, in Delhi.

His mortal remains are likely to reach Imphal on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed profound sadness over the passing of the veteran politician.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of veteran politician from Ukhrul district, Shri AS Arthur, former Minister of GAD & Forest, who breathed his last at the age of 99 in New Delhi. His demise leaves a profound void in the political landscape of Manipur,” the Chief Minister wrote on Facebook.

He said that Arthur was elected for two terms and remained an active and respected figure in the political sphere during the 1980s and 1990s. He was an exemplary leader, known for his commitment to public service and his tireless efforts towards the welfare, progress, and development of the state.

“His passing is an irreparable loss, and his contributions will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude,” he added.

The Chief Minister also expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, relatives, friends, and well-wishers, stating, “In this moment of grief, I stand in solidarity with them and pray for strength and solace to bear this great loss.”

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.
