The National Institute of Technology, Manipur conducted its first training programme under Phek district on beekeeping, floriculture and fruit orchards on 19 February 2026 at Government Middle School, Pfutseromi Village, Nagaland. The programme was organised in collaboration with the North East Development Agency under the research project, “Mainstreaming Agrobiodiversity Conservation for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods.”

The project is sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change through the G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment. The Principal Investigator is Dr Adani Azhoni, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at NIT Manipur. The Co-Principal Investigators are Dr Chubbamenla Jamir, Founder-Director of Native Foodscape, and Dr Mala Narang.

The resource persons for the programme were Dr Sao Tunyi, a physician-turned agri-entrepreneur and Founder of Providence Garden, and Chokhone Krichena, Founder and CEO of Dianthe Private Limited.

Dr Tunyi conducted sessions on beekeeping, covering procurement of bee colonies, including swarm capture, baiting techniques and colony division, as well as scientific hive management and honey harvesting. He also carried out practical demonstrations on honey quality testing, including moisture content assessment. In addition, he trained participants on nursery establishment, introducing grafting methods, air-layering, vegetative propagation, orchard planning and planting techniques, pruning practices, thinning and post-harvest management.

Krichena led a session on floriculture, outlining its scope, importance and emerging opportunities. She discussed cultivation practices, post-harvest management, pricing strategies and market prospects, and addressed sustainable forestry approaches and the promotion of commercially viable flower species suited to hill regions. She encouraged participants to utilise locally available resources for livelihood development.

According to the organisers, 50 farmers and young entrepreneurs from Pfutseromi Village, Kiphire, Tseminyu, Thipuzu Village and Phusachodu Village attended the training.

Similar training programmes were also conducted in two other locations in Phek district on 21 February 2026. At Pfutsero Town, 44 participants attended, while 47 participants took part in the programme held in Kikruma Village.
