Imphal: The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) on Friday in a solidarity expressed a strong condemnation and denounce the death threat against Dr Rosemary Dzüvichu for her advocacy for Women Reservation and her sociopolitical assertion for the upliftment of the women communities.
In its statement, the NWU stated that to a well-known crusader, such intimidatory threat is a grave affront not only to her life. But, to the ethical values and chastity of all the women.
The NWU maintained that the Patriarchal structure and social system that undermine women is not an appropriate tool for the current society anymore and considered such threat not only as a threat to an individual lady but to the whole women communities.
“The women reservation is a long overdue right of the women across the nation,” it stated.
The NWU further said that any attempt to silence women voices through coersion or threat and verbal abuse will not be tolerated by the women and girls, who are in high level activism for their rights.
The Naga women body further demanded that such intimidator should be punished under the Indian Penal Code such as IPC Sections 503, 506 and 507 – Punishment for Criminal Intimidation, threats to cause death, grievous hurt, or outrage modesty and IPC Section 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult modesty of woman, acts, or verbal harassment).
The NWU also questioned the administrators of Unified Naga Land for Christ on social media for failing to take utmost priority to screen the post that breach the regulations of the content they manage or publish.
The NWU further urged the Government to ensure that the culprit is given befitting punishment under the law, without delay and unitedly extended its solidarity with the bold lady, Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichu, advisor to the Nagaland Mothers’ Association who has undaunted spirit for the women’s and societal causes.
“The voices will rise louder and stronger until justice is served,” it added.
According to Dr Rosemary Dzüvichu, the death threat message for her on a Facebook Naga group was not only a warning to her but young and old feminists who have stood for women reservation.
“I have lived and stood through many death threats on my life all these years of the struggle for holding the long over due Municipal elections in Nagaland and reservation of seats for women,” she posted on her Facebook account.
In her FB post, she further mentioned that Municipal elections have been held, more than a hundred women now sit in the Urban Local Bodies in the state through their constitutional rights and the ruling of the Supreme Court.
“Women’s rights are human rights and many of us have faced hatred, defamation and threats to see our women step into these decision making bodies. Killing me with a bullet will not stop Naga women articulating about their rights,” she added.
