Imphal: A Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) was safely rescued and released back into its natural habitat in Manipur’s Senapati district. The successful operation was carried out jointly by the Senapati Forest Department and the Sadim Pukhri Village Authority.
The rescue was initiated after a distress call was made by Joseph Kaba, a farmer from Sadim Malingli, a small hamlet under the jurisdiction of Sadim Pukhri. Kaba discovered the pangolin, which appeared to be displaced from its natural habitat, and promptly alerted authorities.
Responding swiftly, the Forest Department dispatched a team accompanied by Dr. Chang L., Veterinary Officer at the District Veterinary Office, Senapati. The animal was thoroughly examined to assess its health and screen for injuries or potential pathogens.
Following the veterinary check-up, and in accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the pangolin was deemed fit and released safely back into the wild.
Joseph Kaba, who also serves as the Chairman of Sadim Malingli village, highlighted the urgent need to reduce human-wildlife conflict and called for greater compassion toward endangered and voiceless species. “Protecting wildlife is our shared responsibility,” he said, applauding the community’s active role in conservation.
The Forest Department also appealed to the public to join hands in safeguarding biodiversity and preserving natural ecosystems for future generations. “This successful rescue and release is a testament to what communities can achieve when they come together for conservation,” the department noted.
The Sadim Pukhri village community has long been committed to environmental protection. For over a decade, they have actively preserved the forest areas surrounding Sadim Lizai Lake. Much of this work has been spearheaded by the Sadim Lizai Students & Youth Association (SLSYA), in collaboration with the Village Authority. Their efforts include patrolling forested areas, spreading awareness about endangered species, and protecting local biodiversity.
