Senapati: The Indian Army on Wednesday inaugurated the much-anticipated 2nd Indigenous Naga Wrestling District Level Junior Championship-2024 in Manipur’s Senapati district.
The championship, which runs from December 4 to 6, 2024, is aimed at promoting traditional sports and fostering camaraderie among the youth. Building on the success of its inaugural edition, the event is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Naga community.
The championship is open to male participants aged 10 to 20 years, who will compete in three weight categories: under 55kg, 55kg to 65kg, and above 65kg. It seeks to identify and nurture young talent in the indigenous sport of Naga wrestling, while providing a platform for participants to showcase their skills in a spirit of healthy competition.

An official from the Indian Army emphasized the championship’s importance in encouraging youth engagement and promoting traditional sports as a means of strengthening community bonds. “This initiative highlights the Army’s commitment to fostering positive relationships with local communities and celebrating their unique cultural practices,” the official stated.
This year’s event has drawn a large number of participants and spectators, transforming it into a significant cultural and sporting celebration. Youth from Senapati and the surrounding regions have been invited to participate in the event, which promises not only to celebrate the traditional sport but also to enhance ties between the armed forces and the local population.
The championship is seen as a step toward bridging gaps between tradition and modernity, and the platform it offers to young athletes has been lauded by community leaders and local authorities. With the growing interest in indigenous sports, the 2nd Indigenous Naga Wrestling Championship underscores the importance of preserving and promoting age-old traditions while inspiring the next generation.
