Manipur: Kuki militant leader shot dead in Churachandpur

Churachandpur: Unidentified armed miscreants shot and killed a self-styled town commander and PRO of the proscribed United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in Churachandpur district, Manipur, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Satkhohao Haokip from Kaprang village, was found dead around 12:15 am near the Anglo-Kuki War Cemetery gate, according to police.

His body has been sent to Churachandpur Medical College mortuary, and a case has been registered. The motive for the killing remains unclear, police added.

The Kuki civil bodies strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a heinous crime. They stated that Haokip had been abducted from his home the previous night in front of his family.

A joint statement by Kuki Inpi Churachandpur, Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi, Kuki Students’ Organisation, and Kuki Women Union Kuki Women Organisations for Human Rights expressed grief over the incident.

“The Kuki CSOs, amidst the ongoing strife with our enemy, considered this as unfortunate. We will not accept any form of violence amongst us, and any responsible organisation involved in this heinous crime will not be acceptable to the Kuki populace,” it stated.

The civil societies also urged people to avoid future acts of violence.
