Guwahati: The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), comprising eight student unions from the seven states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing deep concern over the ongoing violence in Manipur, which has continued for 16 months.
The student bodies include the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), and Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF). In their letter, NESO condemned the violence, calling it “deplorable” and against the principles of humanity, peace, and coexistence.
“The prolonged conflict has led to the tragic loss of innocent lives, widespread destruction of property, and created an atmosphere of fear and instability throughout the state,” the letter stated. NESO also raised concerns about the recent reports of drone and missile strikes, which have further worsened the situation and deepened the divide between communities.
The organisation emphasised the need for peaceful dialogue, urging the Government of India to take decisive action. NESO expressed frustration over the lack of response from Prime Minister Modi, noting that he has yet to visit Manipur since the violence began. “The absence of timely leadership has allowed the conflict to escalate, worsening the suffering of the people,” the letter stated.
NESO called on the Prime Minister to visit Manipur, assess the situation, and provide security for vulnerable civilians, particularly women and children. The letter also urged the formation of a high-level peace committee, involving representatives from all communities, to facilitate a lasting solution.
