Imphal: A tragic incident unfolded in Manipur as fresh violence erupted between rival armed groups, resulting in the loss of two lives.
The skirmish occurred on Saturday just days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections slated to commence on April 19 in the state.
Sources informed that the exchange of gunfire and explosive shells erupted around 8:30 am near the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts.
The clash took place between unidentified armed factions, from Kamuching under Maphou Dam Police Station in Kangpokpi district towards Moirangpurel village under Andro AC in Imphal East.
Village defence volunteers retaliated, leading to the death of two Kuki-Zo from Kangpokpi district.
The deceased have been identified as Kamminlal Lupheng (23) S/o Paolet Lupheng of Nongdam Kuki under Maphoudam Police Station, and Kamlengsat Lunkim (22) S/o Thangkhomang Lunkim of Bongjang Village.

In the wake of this violence, the Committee on Tribal Unity has called for a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi district, effective from midnight on Saturday.
The shutdown is in protest against the “inhuman and barbaric” of the “secessionist meitei militants” and their disregard for the alleged violation of the Election Model Code of Conduct.
