Manipur: Transport body raises highway extortion concern with Guv

Imphal: A delegation comprising six members of the Akhil Bhartiya Transport Association convened at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday to apprise Governor Anusuiya Uikey of the escalating challenges faced by transporters in Manipur, particularly concerning highway security and extortion issues.

The delegation, representing transporters of all goods, including essential commodities, presented a memorandum highlighting the day-to-day hurdles encountered by transporters amidst the critical situation prevailing along the highways of Manipur.

They underscored the adverse impact of extortion and the resultant rise in commodity prices on both truck drivers and the general public.

In their interaction with Governor Uikey, the delegation expressed grave concern over the precarious security situation on National Highways 2 and 37. They reported incidents of illegal tax collection and extortion by self-styled groups and miscreants at various checkpoints along these vital transportation routes.

Seeking urgent intervention, the delegation urged the Governor to address the severity of the situation and alleviate the hardships faced by truck drivers, transporters, and the populace of Manipur at large.

In response, Governor Uikey assured the delegation of her proactive engagement with relevant authorities to address the pressing issues. She disclosed that she had previously raised concerns regarding highway security and extortion during a recent meeting with the Union Home Minister in Shillong. Additionally, discussions with the Security Advisor, Chief Secretary, and Chief Minister had been held to explore measures to curb illegal activities along the national highways.

Governor Uikey pledged to escalate the matter with Central leaders and suggested a meeting with the Security Advisor to devise effective strategies for tackling the menace of extortion and ensuring safe passage for transporters.
