Imphal: In a proud moment for Manipur and the nation, Padma Shri awardee and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal on the third day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 31-year-old set new Commonwealth Games records by lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk.
The victory marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having previously won the title in 2018 and 2022.
Following her triumph, congratulatory messages poured in from across the country, including from President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
An emotional Mirabai Chanu was seen fighting back tears as the Indian national anthem played during the medal ceremony.
After her historic victory, Mirabai Chanu thanked her mother and family members, who she said had continuously prayed for her throughout her sporting journey and competitions.
She also expressed gratitude to her coach, the entire support staff, the Weightlifting Federation of India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), OGQ, the Indian Olympic Association, IOS, her sponsors, and every Indian who had stood by her with unwavering support and belief.
“I am pleased with my performance and truly humbled to win my third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. This being my fourth Commonwealth Games appearance makes this achievement even more special,” she said.
Congratulating her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting! The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48kg category, winning gold. With three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals and an overall fourth CWG medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian.”
