Meghalaya Police has launched a dedicated Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) to handle terrorism-related cases across the state.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, speaking to the media after inaugurating the ATS office, said the newly formed team will focus on threats such as bomb scares and suspicious activities, ensuring that the state remains free from terror incidents.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Davis Marak explained that while various police units manage different responsibilities—ranging from investigations to field operations—there was a pressing need for a specialised squad solely focused on counter-terrorism.

Marak added that the Ministry of Home Affairs had directed the creation of the ATS to establish a dedicated force for handling terrorism-related matters. The squad will be responsible for conducting investigations, carrying out operations, and gathering intelligence on potential terror threats.

Currently, the ATS is a small unit but is expected to expand with additional personnel. It operates through two teams: one trained for jungle warfare and the other for urban operations, enabling the squad to respond effectively to diverse security challenges.

The team will also receive specialised training and modern equipment to enhance its capability in managing any terrorist threat in Meghalaya.

Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong further noted that while the ATS currently has sufficient manpower, ongoing recruitment within the police department will soon address any shortfall, ensuring the squad remains adequately staffed to meet the state’s security needs.

The launch of the ATS marks a significant step in strengthening Meghalaya’s counter-terrorism framework, providing a dedicated, professional force to safeguard the state against evolving security threats.
