Kohima: In a significant step towards promoting skill-based STEM education, the Directorate of Science and Technology, Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU), organised a two-day hands-on drone workshop at the Village Council Hall in Kidima on June 12–13.
The workshop, described as Nagaland’s first drone training programme aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, brought together 120 students from 16 government and private schools across the southern area of Kohima district.
The programme began with a welcome address by SASU president Kehozhol Noel Kulnu. The workshop was inaugurated by Zerütso Kesiezie, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Kezocha, who encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies and make the most of hands-on learning opportunities to develop innovation and practical skills.
Delivering the background note, Er. Onongoto Soleho, Chief Mentor at the Innovation Hub and Science Education Centre (SEC) under the Department of Science and Technology, said the workshop was a pioneering initiative sanctioned by the department to bridge the gap between students’ aspirations and the NEP 2020 vision of integrating emerging technologies into education.
He emphasised the importance of science and technology outreach in narrowing the regional digital divide, fostering a creator mindset among students, and advancing the experiential and vocational learning objectives outlined in the national education policy.
The technical sessions were led by Er. Vikuovotuo Zhale, Junior Mentor; Er. Mhasheto Yhobu, Technical Assistant; and Er. Kekhruseto Soleho, Intern Engineer.

During the workshop, students received practical training in drone technology, beginning with the identification of drone components and chassis assembly before progressing to circuitry, calibration and live test flights. The programme culminated in an inter-school drone flight competition, where participants demonstrated the skills acquired during the training.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Noseto Ltu, Finance Secretary of SASU.
