The Assam government has declared 22 and 23 September as dry days across the state as a mark of respect to singer and actor Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on 19 September.
The decision follows the extension of the state mourning period until 23 September. In an official notification issued by the Excise Department, the government said all liquor outlets, including IMFL and beer retail shops, country spirit shops, wholesale warehouses, bars, clubs and licensed establishments, would remain closed on both days.
No liquor will be sold or served during this period, the order stated.
The notification, signed by the Secretary of the Excise Department, has been sent to all district commissioners, excise officers, autonomous councils and other relevant authorities for immediate enforcement.
The state has been in mourning since the death of Zubeen Garg, a celebrated musician, lyricist, actor and filmmaker, whose popularity extended across Assam and the Northeast.
