The alleged mastermind of the Nagaon trading scam, Anirban Deuri, was arrested by Nagaon police in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was tracked down to Faridabad, where he had been hiding with his family.
Police sources said Deuri, along with Kashyap Phukan and several others, had set up a financial institution named Bull’s Eye in Nagaon town in 2022. The institution collected large sums of money from investors, including doctors, engineers, government officials, contractors, businessmen and journalists, by promising high returns.
Initially, Bull’s Eye made regular payments to investors, but later failed to do so, sparking protests and unrest in the town.
After receiving multiple complaints, Nagaon police registered a case and launched an investigation. While Phukan was out on bail and had remained in contact with investors, Deuri had been absconding.
Following his arrest, Deuri was brought to Nagaon Sadar police station early on Thursday, where he underwent a medical examination before being interrogated. Phukan has also been detained and questioned. Both were later taken to the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police for further interrogation.
Investors have demanded that authorities act swiftly to recover their money. Some had earlier staged protests outside Phukan’s residence, leading to tense situations in the locality.
Police are expected to produce Deuri in court on Friday.
