New academic block inaugurated at Nagaland Uni’s Kohima campus

Nagaland University held an official inauguration ceremony on 14 July 2025 for a newly completed academic building at its Kohima Campus in Meriema. The facility will house the Department of Education and the Department of Teacher Education.

The event commenced with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, formally inaugurating the structure through a ribbon-cutting and monolith unveiling, witnessed by members of the Nagaland University community. Present at the event were Pro Vice-Chancellor of Kohima Campus, Prof N. Venuh, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Medziphema Campus, Prof Dipak Sinha, Registrar Dr Abemo, deans, faculty, administrative staff, students, and other stakeholders.

The proceedings were chaired by Prof Lungsang Zeliang, Head of the Department of Education, who welcomed attendees and acknowledged the contributions of various departments and individuals involved in the building’s completion. She noted that the project was driven by collective effort and long-term dedication.

An invocation was delivered by Prof Buno Zetsuvi, Chairperson of the Construction Monitoring Committee, after which Executive Engineer Er Rukusayi Rhakho provided an overview of the building’s design, construction process, and costs.

Registrar Dr Abemo addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of collaboration and productivity in fostering growth within the university. He urged those present to remain committed to the institution’s development.

Prof N. Venuh, in his remarks, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his continued support and outlined the timeline of the project, which had been under construction for eight years. He acknowledged delays and obstacles faced over the years and confirmed that further development is underway, including the sanctioning of a conference hall and an auditorium — facilities long considered necessary for the Kohima Campus. He called upon the university community to take care of the new infrastructure and cultivate a constructive atmosphere for academic growth.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Patnaik reflected on the broader context of the university’s development, noting that while new academic departments had been introduced over the past three decades, infrastructure expansion had not kept pace. He highlighted the role of Prof Buno Zetsuvi in advancing campus development initiatives and pointed to more efficient use of development funds in recent years. He acknowledged challenges that existed prior to his tenure and commended those involved in seeing the project through, including the recently retired Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof G.T. Thong.

Addressing the students directly, Prof Patnaik underlined the university’s goal of maintaining high standards and insisted that quality infrastructure is essential. He added that budget constraints should not limit efforts to improve educational facilities. Emphasising responsibility, he encouraged students and researchers to work diligently and uphold academic integrity.
