The Government of Meghalaya has officially announced the return of the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, with its 2025 edition set to take place on 14 and 15 November. To mark World Music Day, authorities revealed that international music stars Jason Derulo and The Script will headline the event, scheduled across key venues in Shillong including Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Ward’s Lake.
The upcoming festival is being promoted as part of Meghalaya’s broader efforts to develop what it calls a “Concert Economy” — a cultural and economic initiative aimed at generating long-term employment, supporting local talent, and boosting tourism through live events. Over the past year, the state’s creative economy strategy has received significant public funding, with Rs 23.5 crore allocated for the 2025 financial year alone.
Speaking during the launch, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the event reflects more than just entertainment. “Every concert is a celebration of who we are. We are not just hosting performances; we are building an economy of talent and identity that speaks to the world,” he said. He noted that while the concept of a concert-led economy has recently gained wider attention, it had already been developed and implemented in Meghalaya. “We have now simply given it better structure and expanded it into much bigger programmes,” he added. The Chief Minister also hinted that additional global performers may be announced in the weeks ahead.
Together, Jason Derulo and The Script have sold over 220 million records worldwide. Their performances are expected to attract one of the largest live audiences ever seen at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, reinforcing Shillong’s emerging reputation as a key destination for international music acts in India.
The state’s investment in cultural programming has already produced measurable results. According to official figures, festival-related events over the past year drew more than 76,000 attendees. These events contributed Rs 33.78 crore to the hospitality sector and supported the creation of over 5,500 daily wage opportunities, particularly benefitting youth, women, artisans, and rural business owners.
