Bomb threat in Shillong: Police nab suspect, security beefed up

Shillong: In a swift overnight operation, the Special Operation Team (SOT) of East Khasi Hills arrested Edward Maiong, 37-year-old, a temporary resident of Lower New Colony, Laitumkhrah, for allegedly sending a bomb threat message.

The accused allegedly threatened multiple bomb blasts in the city.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem revealed that Maiong had sent the threatening SMS to an unnamed individual on January 22 at 6:19 PM, claiming to be a member of the “Ri-Bhoi gang.”

During the operation, police recovered and seized the phone used to issue the threats.

SP Syiem stated, “At this stage, we cannot rule out his links with any militant outfit, as there is incriminating evidence against him.”

In response to the incident, district police have intensified security measures, including combing operations, heightened patrolling, and strict checking at various points in the city, to ensure public safety ahead of Republic Day celebrations.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement. For emergencies, the public can contact the nearest police station, the Police Control Room at +916009196479, or Dial 112 for immediate assistance.
