Guwahati: Assam Down Town University has suspended five students from Manipur with effect from September 17, after receiving complaints linking them to unlawful activities, including an alleged rape case involving a student from Tripura.
The suspended students, enrolled in different diploma and degree programmes, have been barred from all academic and extracurricular activities until the inquiry concludes. The university said disciplinary action will follow once police file a charge sheet, reiterating its commitment to upholding discipline and institutional integrity.
The case has drawn significant public attention after a video showing students confronting the accused began circulating on social media.
Reacting to the incident, Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma, titular king of Tripura and chairman of Tipra Motha, wrote on Facebook:
“In a serious developing issue, a girl from Tripura was allegedly raped in Guwahati. I have spoken to the victim and offered all help to her. I appeal to everyone not to speculate and to ensure the identity of the girl is protected. I also appeal to certain sections of the media to be responsible and avoid sensationalising this matter or conducting a media trial. I will stand with the victim to ensure she gets justice.”
