Guwahati: Professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya of the Department of Environmental Science, Tezpur University, Assam, has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi, one of the country’s highest scientific honours. The fellowship will be effective from January 2026.

Only two scientists from Northeast India were selected for this year’s INSA fellowship, awarded for outstanding contributions to science and research.

Prof. Bhattacharya, who heads the Soil and Agro Bioengineering Laboratory at Tezpur University, is known for his pioneering research in waste management, soil health restoration, medicinal plant bioactivity under changing environmental conditions, nano-fertiliser development, and earthworm gut microbiology.

He has guided more than seven PhD scholars, published over 90 research articles — including 75 in reputed high-impact journals — and holds an Indian patent (2020) for novel soil conditioners, a technology that has since been licensed for use.

The INSA, established in 1935 and functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, is India’s premier academy of sciences. It recognises excellence in scientific research, provides policy advice to the government, nurtures talent through fellowships and awards, and represents India in international scientific forums.
