Guwahati: GNRC Hospitals, a leading chain of tertiary care super-specialty hospitals in Assam and West Bengal, has launched a dedicated Botulinum Toxin (BoNT) clinic at its Dispur campus to treat patients with a range of neurological disorders.
While popularly known for cosmetic applications as ‘Botox’, BoNT’s therapeutic uses in neurology are well-established worldwide. It is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum—among the most poisonous substances in nature—but is safe and effective in controlled medical doses.
The new clinic will focus on conditions such as post-stroke or post-head injury muscle stiffness and spasms, neck muscle disorders causing abnormal head posture, chronic migraine, eye muscle disorders like strabismus and blepharospasm, and certain movement disorders. BoNT works by blocking nerve signals that cause abnormal muscle contractions, providing relief from pain, stiffness and involuntary movements.
Managed by senior neurologist Dr Nabajyoti Barkataky, with support from Dr Rupjyoti Das and Dr Alfarid Shahid Ali, the clinic aims to improve patients’ comfort, mobility and quality of life. “BoNT therapy is a scientifically proven and safe option for select neurological conditions,” Dr Barkataky said.
Founded by Dr Nomal Chandra Borah in 1985, GNRC has been running its Universal Health Mission – Quality Healthcare for Everyone with a focus on affordability and accessibility. Its Swasthya Mitra network of community health workers in Assam has already earned widespread recognition.
“With this clinic, GNRC is taking another step towards bringing advanced, globally-recognised therapies within reach of people in the Northeast,” said Mrinal Ali Hazarika, who heads marketing and brand promotion for the group.
