Tezpur University outlines vision for growth at 22nd Convocation

The Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, called on students to transform challenges into opportunities during the 22nd Convocation of Tezpur University, where he served as the chief guest. The event, held in Assam’s Tezpur, marked a momentous occasion for 1,363 graduating students, including PhD scholars, postgraduates, and undergraduates.

In his address, Prof. Kumar highlighted the global nature of contemporary challenges such as climate change and extreme poverty. He emphasised that these issues demand collective attention and innovative solutions. “We are part of the global citizenry now,” he said, urging the students to view these challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation.

He drew attention to the achievements of Indian initiatives such as the Aditya L1 solar mission and the country’s digital payment systems, showcasing them as examples of India’s capacity for innovation. He also noted the leadership roles Indians hold in Fortune 500 companies, stating, “They are products of our education system.”

Prof. Kumar stressed the importance of inclusive higher education, ensuring that individuals from weaker sections of society are integral to the growth journey. He spoke about the National Education Policy (NEP), describing it as a framework rooted in constitutional values. According to him, the NEP promotes diversity, skill-based education, and inclusivity, aligning with the aspirations of modern India.

He encouraged students to embrace lifelong learning and keep their curiosity alive, highlighting that education is a continuous process that evolves with time.

The Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Tezpur University, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, presided over the event, emphasising the transformative power of education. In his address, he reminded students of their responsibility towards society and the nation. “True education should not just fill minds with information but also cultivate empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards fellow human beings,” he said.

Quoting Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he urged students to pursue greatness with dedication, stating, “If you want to shine like a sun, first burn like a sun.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh outlined the university’s vision for growth, announcing plans to establish new departments in disciplines such as Economics, Psychology, Political Science, and Performing Arts. He also highlighted the university’s thriving research ecosystem and upcoming infrastructure projects, aimed at fostering innovation and academic excellence.

During the ceremony, 131 PhD scholars, 739 postgraduates, 428 undergraduates, and 65 diploma and online learners were awarded degrees. A total of 49 toppers were recognised with gold medals. The Best Graduate Award was conferred on Sumantra Choudhury of the B.Tech programme in Food Engineering and Technology, while Abhinav Hazarika of the Integrated M.Sc programme in Chemistry received the Best Postgraduate Award.
