Guwahati: Former Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam and current Chief Information Commissioner, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, delivered a compelling lecture on “Democracy, Freedom of Speech and Transparency” at Tezpur University’s Council Hall on Tuesday.
The lecture, organized by the Department of Law and Dr. Ambedkar Chair, marked Constitution Day celebrations at the university, which is observed on November 26th each year to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution.
Mahanta emphasized the significance of the Indian Constitution in shaping the nation’s democratic framework and urged the youth to understand the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in securing its adoption.
He cautioned against using violence as a form of protest, stating that it leads to chaos and undermines the right to life of others. He also highlighted the importance of the Right to Information Act in promoting transparency.
Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, addressed the gathering, reminding attendees that the Constitution bestows both rights and responsibilities upon citizens. He stressed the importance of upholding constitutional values, respecting the law, and actively participating in democratic processes.
The event commenced with a reading of the Indian Constitution’s preamble and featured the inauguration of a wall magazine on the theme by the Department of Law.
Dr. Madhumita Acharjee, Head of the Department of Law; Dr. Amiya Kumar Das, Ambedkar Chair professor; Prof. Chandan Kumar Sharma, Director of International Affairs; along with faculty and students from the department were present at the event.
