Nagaland: Two arrested in Kohima with 20,000 suspected Yaba tablets

Kohima: Two persons were arrested after Kohima Police allegedly recovered around 20,000 suspected Yaba (methamphetamine) tablets from a vehicle during checking at Kidima Prayer Park Junction, police said.

The vehicle, a Hyundai Venue bearing registration number AS01EB0630, was intercepted during routine vehicle checking. Police personnel reportedly noticed modifications to the vehicle, including a portion of the floor that appeared to have been recently welded and painted.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of small packets wrapped in black polythene concealed within structural cavities of the vehicle, according to police.

Police said 10 medium-sized packets were recovered from the vehicle. The packets contained smaller packages, which were found to contain approximately 20,000 suspected Yaba tablets.

According to police, the seized tablets have an estimated minimum street value of Rs 800 per tablet, putting the total estimated value of the seizure at around Rs 1.60 crore.

The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested at the spot. They were identified as Nazrul Islam, 36, son of Sajjad Ali, and Deben Kumar Das, 40, son of Basanta Kumar Das, both from Silchar district in Assam.

During preliminary questioning, the two allegedly told police that they were transporting the drugs from Churachandpur in Manipur to Silchar, Assam.

A case has been registered at Kezocha Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Further investigation is underway to establish the alleged supply network and backward linkages in the interstate drug trafficking case.
