Tezpur University workshop bridges gap etween theory and industry practice

The Department of Electrical Engineering at Tezpur University has commenced a five-day workshop, titled “Bridging the Gap Between Industry and Academia in Electrical Engineering,” aimed at strengthening collaboration between academic research and industry requirements. Launched on 4 November 2024, the workshop has brought together prominent figures from academia and industry to discuss the critical alignment of educational curricula with real-world industry demands.

The event featured Prabhat Kamal Bezboruah, former Chairman of the Tea Board of India, as the Guest of Honour. Addressing participants, Bezboruah emphasised the necessity of transforming the existing educational ecosystem to better support research that directly contributes to practical applications and impactful outcomes. Highlighting the urgency of curriculum reforms, he noted that aligning academic content with industry standards is crucial for preparing graduates to meet modern challenges effectively.

Prof R. R. Hoque, Vice Chancellor (in-charge) of Tezpur University, spoke on the value of integrating research and development initiatives from both sectors to drive innovation and promote economic progress. Adding to this, Prof Partha Pratim Sahu, Dean of the School of Engineering, underscored the importance of industry involvement in academic endeavours, pointing out that while Indian researchers frequently develop successful prototypes, these often face obstacles in reaching the commercial market.

Dr Manashita Borah, faculty coordinator of the workshop, discussed the workshop’s goal to familiarise participants with recent advancements in electrical engineering, covering industry best practices and emerging technologies. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from experts on topics such as power systems, control systems, signal processing, and renewable energy.

Notable speakers included representatives from prominent organisations and institutions like Lam Research USA, the University of Manchester in the UK, Assam’s tea industry, IIT Bombay, and IIT Guwahati, who shared insights on how academic research can better align with industry needs and contribute to substantial societal impact. The workshop is expected to foster greater synergy between academic research and industry, paving the way for transformative projects and practical innovations in electrical engineering.
