Guwahati: Women journalists across Assam have united to establish a network aimed at fostering their professional growth. The group convened on Saturday at the Gauhati Press Club, where they officially named the organisation the Assam Women Journalists’ Forum (AWJF).
The meeting commenced with a one-minute silence in memory of the doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at her workplace in Kolkata. Following this solemn start, the participants engaged in discussions on a range of issues pertinent to women in the media profession. They resolved to form a forum dedicated to facilitating interaction, building relationships, exchanging information, and sharing experiences and views related to both the profession and wider societal issues.
The AWJF will focus on organising workshops, seminars, and tours designed to enhance the skills of women in the media. Senior members of the forum have committed to mentoring new entrants to the profession, providing guidance and support as they navigate their careers.
In addition to professional development, the forum aims to ensure the safety and security of women media professionals, both in the workplace and while on field assignments, particularly during night shifts. The organisation is also committed to addressing and eliminating disparities in newsrooms and promoting equality within the workplace.
The meeting concluded with the decision to register the AWJF as a society, and a committee was formed to oversee its activities. The committee members are:
- President: Durba Ghosh (PTI)
- Vice Presidents: Semim Sultana (Dainik Agradoot), Afrida Hussain (Prag News)
- General Secretary: Nasreen Habib (The Assam Tribune)
- Joint Secretaries: Mridusmita Bhuyan (DY365), Arunima Kalita Medhi (Asomiya Khabar)
- Treasurer: Bidisha Singha (The Assam Tribune)
- Organising Secretaries: Tora Agarwala (Independent journalist), Anjumoni Bordoloi (Pratidin Time)
- Publicity Secretaries: Manisha Kalita (Desh Today), Chandrani Sinha (Independent journalist)
Additionally, seven executive members were selected, along with an advisory council comprising senior journalists from across Assam.
Dear Reader,
Every day, our team at EastMojo travels through rain, rough roads, and remote hills to bring you stories that matter – stories from your town, your people, your Northeast.
We do this because we believe in truthful, independent journalism. No big corporate backing, no government pressure – just honest reporting by local journalists who live and breathe the same air you do.
But to keep doing this work, we need you. Your small contribution helps us pay our reporters fairly, reach places others ignore, and keep asking the tough questions.
If you believe the Northeast deserves its own fearless voice, stand with us.
Support independent journalism. Be a Member.
Thank you,
Karma Paljor
