Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed concerns that the current instability in Bangladesh could transform the country into a haven for insurgents and potentially lead to illegal immigration into the northeastern states of India.
Sarma emphasised the importance of the central government maintaining active engagement with Bangladesh’s new administration to address these issues, underscoring the priority of safeguarding the interests of the northeastern region.
“We are worried about what is happening in Bangladesh,” the Chief Minister stated to reporters at an event in Dergaon on Wednesday. “If the situation doesn’t improve, it could impact our region in two ways,” he added.
Highlighting the necessity of securing the border between the two nations, Sarma noted, “People from the neighbouring country may attempt to enter the region through the India-Bangladesh boundary.”
