Boko: In a tragic incident, 29-year-old Gautam Kalita from Hekra village, located along the Kamrup and Goalpara district border, was killed in a mob lynching on Saturday night at Boko.
According to OC Dhupdhara PS Birdaw Goyari, Kalita was brutally beaten by several youths in Bagdoba village, Goalpara district, on the suspicion that he was involved with a bike theft gang on Wednesday, 24th July 2024.
Kalita was admitted to GMCH with serious injuries following the attack. Meanwhile, his family members filed an FIR at Dhupdhara Police Station against Deba Boro, Taufik Ali, and Rahul Rabha.
After recovering somewhat, Kalita was brought home on Friday. However, his health deteriorated on Saturday afternoon, and he was rushed to Kalyani Hospital in Boko in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, Kalita’s family demanded justice through a proper investigation. In response, OC Birdaw Goyari led a police team that apprehended the three individuals named in the FIR, along with another suspect, Lankeswar Das, on Saturday night. A case has been registered, and the four arrested individuals are currently being questioned at Dhupdhara Police Station.
On Sunday, villagers from Hekra encircled the Dhupdhara Police Station, shouting slogans and demanding justice for Kalita.
Goalpara Police ASP Crime Rituraj Doley, ASP Headquarters Anita Hazarika, and DSP Khargeswar Rabha visited Dhupdhara Police Station to assess the situation.
