The Sahitya Academy has unveiled the winners of its 2024 awards, showcasing a notable presence of Assam writers. Children’s Literature has particularly captivated readers with its “compelling narrative and deep cultural insights,” as noted by the academy in a press release.
Ranju Hazarika has been honoured for his Assamese novel, Biponna Bismoi Khel, which has garnered critical acclaim for its “compelling narrative and deep cultural insights.”
Virgin Jekova Machahary has received accolades for her Bodo poetry collection, Buhuma Boynibw, praised for its “lyrical beauty and profound exploration of Bodo culture and identity.”
Nayanjyoti Sarma was recognised in the Youth Awards category for his collection of Assamese short stories, Jaal Kota Jui, appreciated for its “nuanced depiction of human emotions and the intricacies of societal dynamics.”
Another distinguished awardee, Rani Baro, was commended for her Bodo short story collection, Saikhlum, which blends realism with imaginative themes and resonates deeply with readers.
Young poet Sutapa Chakraborty from Silchar has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2024 for her anthology Deraje Halud Ful, Gatajanma, reflecting deep emotional depth and vivid imagery.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to Twitter to congratulate all the awardees, expressing pride in their achievements and celebrating their contributions to the state’s literary heritage.
Language-specific juries conducted the selection process for the awards, each comprising three members who evaluated works published between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2022. Recommendations were made based on unanimous or majority votes. Each winner will receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, to be presented at a special ceremony. The Sahitya Akademi has also announced that the award for Sanskrit literature will be disclosed separately at a later date.
