Guwahati: Birubala Rabha, a revered human rights activist and recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, breathed her last on Monday at approximately 9:23 am while undergoing treatment at the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati.
Rabha, whose life was dedicated to combating the scourge of witch-hunting, had been battling cancer in its advanced third stage. She was admitted to the institute on April 22, 2024.
A decision to support Rabha’s treatment was announced by Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, following his visit to the State Cancer Institute to assess her health last Saturday. Born in 1954, Rabha was a stalwart campaigner against witch-hunting in India and played a pivotal role in the passing of the Prevention of and Protection from Witch Hunting Act in 2015.
Expressing his condolences, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media, stating, “I am deeply distressed to learn about the passing away of Padma Shri Smt. Birubala Rabha. Through her untiring efforts to end social evils, she illuminated the paths of scores of women with hope and confidence. Rising through a challenging life, she epitomized courage against all odds. Assam will forever remain grateful for her leadership in serving society.”
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mourned the loss, remarking, “Padma Shri Awardee Birubala Rabha battled against the superstitions and prejudices entrenched in society, exemplifying the strength of women through unwavering determination and courage. Inspired by her work, we shall always remain motivated to persistently serve the community, irrespective of challenges. The news of Baideo’s passing fills my heart with deep sorrow. Her departure leaves an irreplaceable void in Assam’s social fabric. May her soul find peace, and I offer my heartfelt condolences to her grieving family!”
Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, also paid tribute, saying, “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of eminent social activist Padma Shri Birubala Rabha. Her lifelong crusade for women empowerment, social justice & upliftment of the underprivileged has left an enduring mark on our society. She will forever remain a shining beacon of inspiration for us. I extend my sincere condolences to her bereaved family in this hour of grief. May Almighty grant eternal peace to her soul.”
