Guwahati: Female electors, young and old, outnumbered male electors during the three-phase Lok Sabha elections in Assam, with 1,00,04348 women coming out to vote as against 99,83851 men across the 14 parliamentary seats.
The three-phase polls recorded an overall voter turnout of 81.56 percent with as many as 1,99, 88,275 general electors casting their ballots at the polling stations out of a total of 2,45,06236 eligible general voters.
Notably, the final voting percentage calculated at the end of the third and concluding phase across four constituencies on Tuesday was recorded at 85.45, with Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency recording the highest voter turnout at 92.08 percent.
Among the other constituencies that went to the polls amid inclement weather on Tuesday, Barpeta recorded a polling percentage of 85.24 percent, followed by Kokrajhar and Guwahati at 83.55 percent and 78.39 percent respectively.
Notably, the elector gender ratio regarding the third phase polls stood at 995, which officials say is an encouraging sign and indicative of a greater number of women in the electoral rolls than the number of women in the population.
In terms of the size of the electorate, Kokrajhar constituency is the smallest among the four constituencies with 14,84,571 electors, while Dhubri is the largest with 26,60,827 electors.
As a matter of fact, despite the high number of voters, Dhubri recorded the highest voting percentage among all the 14 constituencies that went to the hustings.
It may be mentioned that phase one and phase two of the Lok Sabha polls recorded a voter turnout of 78.25 percent and 81.17 percent respectively.
The first phase was conducted on April 19 followed by the second phase a week later. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
Meanwhile, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) have been safely kept in the strong rooms amid tight security.
Even as the voting percentages were more or less similar during the first phase, held across five seats, Jorhat recorded the highest polling percentage at 79.89 percent, followed by Kaziranga at 79.33 percent; Sonitpur at 78.46 percent; Dibrugarh at 76.75 percent and Lakhimpur at 76.42 percent.
In the second phase of polls held across the same number of seats, the Nagaon parliamentary seat recorded the highest polling percentage at 84.97 percent followed by Darrang-Udalguri at 82.01 percent; Karimganj at 80.48 percent; Silchar at 79.05 percent while Diphu recorded the lowest among the five seats at 75.74 percent.
Notably, extensive arrangements were made by the state election department throughout the phases of the polls to ensure that the polling parties reached their destinations safely and that the polls were conducted smoothly.
The department had taken extensive help from Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) as well as BSF in the riverine areas in this regard, Assam chief electoral officer Anurag Goel said.
On the other hand, EVM-carrying vehicles were equipped with GPS so that vehicle movement could be tracked.

“In all three phases, we have installed GPS on all EVM-carrying vehicles to ensure that they can be tracked at any time. In the third phase, more than 6000 vehicles carrying EVMs were equipped with GPS,” the CEO said, adding that sufficient care has been taken to ensure there is no shortage of EVMs in remote areas.
Goel further informed that as compared to the national average, the voter turnout in the state has been satisfactory.
