Imphal: Environmental Force at Grass Root Level (ENFOGAL), a grassroots environmental organisation based in Ukhrul, has received the State-Level Wildlife Protection Incentive Award 2026 for its efforts to conserve wildlife and biodiversity in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur.
The award was presented during the 72nd Wildlife Week Celebration 2026, organised by the Forest Department of Manipur at the City Convention Centre in Imphal on Wednesday. The event was held under the theme “Connecting Habitat, Thriving Wildlife”.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla attended the event as the chief guest, while Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, who holds the Forests, Environment and Climate Change portfolio, presided over the function. Anurag Bajpai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, was also present.
For nearly a decade, ENFOGAL has worked with village authorities, youth groups and local communities to promote wildlife conservation, habitat protection, biodiversity monitoring and environmental awareness.
A key focus of its work is the conservation of Mrs Hume’s pheasant (Syrmaticus humiae), locally known as Nongin, the state bird of Manipur. The organisation uses camera traps, biodiversity documentation and community engagement to protect the species and its forest habitat.
ENFOGAL is also working to conserve the Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) in Manipur with support from GreenHub and Royal Enfield through a conservation grant initiative. The project focuses on raising awareness, strengthening community participation and addressing threats from hunting and illegal wildlife trafficking.
The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) is another key partner, supporting the organisation’s work on Mrs Hume’s pheasant and other wildlife conservation initiatives.
ENFOGAL’s camera-trap monitoring and biodiversity documentation have also contributed to recording species such as Blyth’s tragopan and other birds and mammals in the forests of Ukhrul and Kamjong.
The organisation said it would continue to strengthen community-led conservation and protect threatened species and their habitats across the two districts.
