Guwahati: As the political fervor intensifies in the northeastern state of Assam ahead of the first phase of general elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is poised to make a significant mark with his scheduled visit for a poll rally on April 17.
Reports suggest that Gandhi’s campaign efforts will be focused on endorsing Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, a candidate from the Congress’ allied party, Assam Jatiya Parishad, in Dibrugarh.
This development comes days after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma challenged Gandhi to campaign in the state. Sarma had expressed confidence that Gandhi’s campaign in Assam would only benefit the BJP.
The timing of Gandhi’s proposed visit coincides with a flurry of campaign activities from political rivals.
Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a high-profile appearance in Assam on April 9, where he participated in a mega poll rally in Lakhimpur and held a roadshow in Tinsukia.
