Guwahati: During Lok Sabha election campaigns in Karimganj and Silchar on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a direct challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, expressing his desire for Gandhi to campaign in the state.
Sarma expressed confidence that Gandhi’s campaign in Assam would only benefit the BJP. This statement comes after Sarma said that the grand old party would cease to exist in the state by 2026.
“I want Rahul Gandhi to come to Assam and campaign. This will benefit the BJP and hundreds of Congressmen will leave the party,” Sarma said, targeting the Wayanad MP during his campaign.
Sarma went on to claim that if Gandhi were to campaign in Assam, it would lead to more members of the Congress party joining the BJP.
The animosity between Sarma and Gandhi has been evident, with the two leaders engaging in verbal sparring during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, where insults were exchanged on multiple occasions.
Referencing Gandhi’s previous Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which traversed through Assam, Sarma remarked, “If he comes again, I will not have to make any effort and many more will join us.”

Continuing his attack on the Congress, Sarma likened the party to an old note, declaring it of no use. “Congress is like an old note now which is of no use and there can be no comparison between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi,” Sarma said at a rally in Silchar.
During the rally, Sarma expressed confidence in PM Modi’s leadership, asserting that the people of the entire country were with him.
