Guwahati: A series of operations in different locations in Assam led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of narcotic substances including heroin and Yaba tablets. As many as five persons including a couple from Tripura and a citizen from Manipur were arrested in the course of the raids.
The first operation was carried out by Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Guwahati’s Lakhtokia area leading to the apprehension of three suspected smugglers.
The raid, which followed the recent arrest of two female peddlers in Tokobari by the STF, was led by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the STF based on a tip-off.
Commencing around 6 pm, the raid on SS Path in Lakhtokia, under the Panbazar Police Station jurisdiction, resulted in the seizure of 42 containers containing approximately 59 grams of heroin, along with Rs 260 in cash, a mobile phone, and two syringes.
The individuals caught in the act of smuggling were identified as Ashkar Ali from Dhubri, Sanjay Dey from Kamrup (metro), and Bikash Chetri from Tinsukia. Further investigations to uncover their connections have been launched.
In a separate joint operation involving the Cachar Police and Assam Rifles in Cachar district, a substantial amount of heroin was seized. The team confiscated 420.57 grams of heroin, concealed within 19 soap boxes, estimated to be worth over Rs 2 crore in the illegal market. Additionally, a resident of Manipur identified as Haomin Thang Dongel was apprehended.
The seized items have an estimated worth of Rs 2.9 crore in the international market, with ongoing investigations to determine the source and destination of the contraband.

Earlier, a couple from Tripura, Bilal Hossain, and an unidentified woman, were arrested in Assam for their alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade. Intercepted in Patharkandi with 10,000 Yaba tablets, the couple, along with their child, had reportedly collected drugs from a secret location in Assam.
They hail from Kalamchora village in Sepahijala District of Tripura. An investigation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been initiated against them.
