Itanagar: Multiple FIRs have been lodged across Arunachal Pradesh against officials of Prag Network and NE News TV over the circulation of an allegedly false report claiming that Chief Minister Pema Khandu was stepping down from his post, triggering a statewide backlash from BJP leaders, supporters and private individuals.
Copies of complaints submitted to police stations across several districts show that BJP functionaries, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leaders, party supporters and other individuals have sought criminal action against the network’s management and editorial team for allegedly publishing and broadcasting unverified information.
The complaints name Prag Network chairman and managing director Dr Sanjive Narain, president Dr Akshata Narain, editor-in-chief Prasanta Rajguru and NE News TV head Nabanitta Kalita as respondents.
FIR applications have reportedly been submitted at police stations in Itanagar, Namsai, Mebo, Raga, Tawang, Changlang, Jairampur, Longding, Chongkham, Sangram, Daporijo, Boleng, Seijosa, Pakke Kessang and several other locations across the state.
In their complaints, the petitioners alleged that the news report falsely claimed that Chief Minister Pema Khandu was stepping down from office and was published without proper verification of facts. They contended that the report created confusion among the public, damaged the reputation and credibility of the chief minister, and undermined public confidence in the state’s democratic governance.
The complainants have sought registration of FIRs under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including sections relating to the publication of false information causing public mischief, as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act and other applicable laws.
Several complaints have also urged police authorities to investigate the circumstances leading to the publication and broadcast of the report, preserve electronic records and digital evidence linked to the news item, and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
Speaking to the media, Capital Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar confirmed that an FIR had been received at Itanagar Police Station and said due process would be followed.
The wave of complaints follows strong reactions from BJP leaders in Arunachal Pradesh. State BJP president Kaling Moyong on Sunday said the party stood firmly behind Chief Minister Pema Khandu and would not entertain speculation while investigations into allegations against him were still underway.
BJP leaders have repeatedly described the resignation report as fake, misleading and politically motivated.
Party leaders said the filing of complaints across multiple districts reflected widespread public anger over what they termed the irresponsible dissemination of misinformation concerning the state’s elected leadership.
