Sixteen private schools in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district are now part of a unique environmental education drive, as the Mobius Young Climate Leaders for Himalayan Development – Arunachal Pradesh rolls out the Pani Pahar curriculum, designed by the University of Cambridge in collaboration with HEARTH Advisors. Launched in June 2025, the program has already reached 469 students.

The curriculum places water at the heart of learning, covering its sources, importance, sustainable management, and the specific challenges faced in Himalayan regions. Lessons are adapted to the local context so students can connect the content with their everyday lives, traditions, and environment.

Mobius Eco Clubs have been formed in each school to anchor Pani Pahar activities, promote peer learning, and encourage environmental responsibility. A weekly “Green Friday” drive urges students to collect waste from their surroundings and bring it to school, building habits of proper waste disposal. Interactive exercises such as mapping local water bodies, identifying plants and animals, creative drawing, and student presentations aim to sharpen observation and problem-solving skills.

According to R.K. Paul Chawang, President of AMYAA NGO and state partner for the initiative, the project blends global environmental education with indigenous knowledge to “prepare a new generation of climate-conscious young leaders capable of addressing environmental challenges in the Eastern Himalayas and building a climate-resilient Arunachal Pradesh.”
