Arunachal: Pema Khandu set to serve as CM for third term

Itanagar: Pema Khandu is set to serve a third consecutive term as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, following his unanimous election as the BJP Legislature Party Leader at a meeting held here on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by BJP’s central observers Tarun Chugh and Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, MPs Tapir Gao and Nabam Rebia and all the elected MLAs of the BJP.

Khandu, later accompanied by Chugh and several legislators, visited Governor K T Parnaik at Raj Bhawan to stake a claim to form the government. The governor subsequently invited Khandu and his ministers for the swearing-in ceremony.

“State BJP president Biyuram Wahge proposed Khandu’s name as chief minister, which was supported by all 46 party MLAs,” Chugh informed reporters at Raj Bhawan.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President J P Nadda, Khandu thanked the people of Arunachal Pradesh for their continued faith in the BJP, which led to the party’s third consecutive term in power.

Khandu also acknowledged the efforts of the party leadership and workers in securing victories for party candidates in the April 19 assembly elections, including the two Lok Sabha MPs.

“I assure the people of the state that the new government, as ‘Team Arunachal’, will fulfill all commitments listed in the election manifesto and ensure that developmental activities are initiated in all districts,” Khandu stated.

Khandu, along with his new council of ministers, will take the oath of office and secrecy at Dorjee Khandu Convention Hall on Thursday.

The ceremony is expected to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J P Nadda, Tripura CM Manik Saha, Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio among several others.
