Itanagar: The Itanagar police have apprehended three individuals involved in a fraudulent scheme, leading to the recovery of Rs 89.28 lakh.
The accused, identified as Kaji Habibur Rahman (35), Mustaque Ahmed Mazumder (43), and Kaji Gias Uddin (47), were apprehended from Hailakandi in Assam following a complaint lodged regarding cheating and misappropriation of funds.
According to Capital SP Rohit Rajbir Singh, the case unfolded when a complaint was filed by N L Tabo of Economics and Statistics Colony, Chimpu, alleging that the accused had defrauded him of Rs. 2.02 crore under the guise of providing central government project work.
The accused had cultivated a relationship with the complainant over a year, persuading him to invest in a purported government project.
“On February 1, the complainant handed over Rs 1.02 crore to the accused for the project and an additional Rs 1 crore in cash was given as the final installment. However, on February 2, both the accused absconded, prompting Tabo to file a police complaint,” the SP said.
Singh stated that upon receiving the complaint at Chimpu police station, a case was swiftly registered due to the significant amount involved. An investigative team was promptly assembled and technical assistance utilized to trace the suspects.
The efforts led to the arrest of Rahman and Mazumder from a lodge in Hailakandi on the evening of February 03. The third associate, Uddin, was apprehended from a remote village where he was found hiding in a relative’s house.
A total of Rs 12,63,00 in cash was seized from their possession, along with the freezing of Rs 76.65 lakh deposited into various accounts. The accused have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
