Rey Mysterio Sr., the legendary Mexican wrestler and uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr., has passed away at the age of 66. The news was confirmed by his family on December 20, 2024.
Misterio Sr., whose real name was Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, dedicated over 30 years to his wrestling career, earning fame in the Mexican lucha libre scene. He achieved championship success with prominent organizations such as the World Wrestling Association and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, considered Mexico’s equivalent of WWE. He was also the grand uncle of Dominik Mysterio.
Known for his high-flying style, Misterio Sr. also showcased his skills internationally, competing in events like World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade in 1990. He leaves behind a legacy of inspiration for countless fans and athletes worldwide.
Lucha Libre AAA expressed their condolences in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, “We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Misterio Sr. retired from wrestling in 2009 but made a one-off return to the ring in 2023.
