Tripura sees fall in infant, maternal mortality rates, says CM

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday said the female labour force participation rate in the state increased from 37.5 per cent in 2022 to 45.9 per cent in 2025, attributing the rise to initiatives aimed at strengthening self-help groups, entrepreneurship and skill development among women.

Addressing the 11th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog on the theme “Human Capital for Viksit Bharat”, Saha said around 4.96 lakh rural women are currently associated with 55,676 self-help groups across the state.

According to the chief minister, the Samriddhi Campaign has helped improve credit flow to women-led self-help groups and enterprises, while efforts are underway to integrate SHG-based micro-enterprises into the formal MSME ecosystem.

He said Women’s Industrial Training Institutes are hosting SHE Skills and Entrepreneurship Centres and the state has formulated the Tripura Women Entrepreneurship Policy 2025.

Dr Saha said women are also being enabled to work in night shifts with adequate safety and security measures.

Highlighting the state’s broader human capital development initiatives, the chief minister said Tripura has adopted a long-term development roadmap, “Lakshya 2047”, aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

He said Tripura’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has doubled over the last six years and the state has emerged as the country’s third fully literate state.

In the education sector, Dr Saha said the state has introduced Mission Mukul to familiarise children with the school environment before formal enrolment.

NIPUN Corners have been established in Foundation Literacy and Numeracy classrooms, while the Vidya-Setu Module is being implemented to support newly admitted Class-I students.

He said the government has developed the Tripura School Quality and Accreditation Framework to assess institutional performance and identify infrastructure gaps. Smart classrooms and tinkering labs have also been established to promote technology-enabled learning and STEM education.

According to the chief minister, 84 schools are being developed under the PM SHRI scheme, while 125 CBSE-pattern model schools have been established through the Vidyajyoti Programme.

He said the educational television channel “Vande Tripura” is providing curriculum-based content for students and supporting teacher training.

Dr Saha also referred to the SAHARSH programme, aimed at promoting socio-emotional learning among students. He said steps are being taken to strengthen higher education through the establishment of new public and private universities and institutionalisation of alumni networks in colleges.

On healthcare, the chief minister said more than three lakh Aadhaar-verified beneficiaries have been covered under the Poshan Tracker. In collaboration with NITI Aayog, the state has launched a School Health Mission with dedicated staff nurses deployed in 125 pilot schools.

He said the Mukhyamantri Sustho Shaishob Sustho Kaishore Abhiyaan has achieved nearly 98 per cent coverage across eight campaigns targeting the health and nutrition of children and adolescents.

Dr Saha said the Mukhyamantri Niramay Arogya Abhiyan is conducting large-scale screening programmes for non-communicable diseases with the objective of covering the entire population above 30 years of age.

He also said Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in the state have received National Quality Assurance Standards certification and medical education capacity has expanded, with MBBS seats increasing from 225 to 550 and postgraduate seats from 85 to 196.

On skill development, Dr Saha said the state is working with Tata Technologies to modernise Industrial Training Institutes through Industry 4.0 courses, workshop upgrades and faculty development. Plans are also underway to establish a World Skill Centre and a School of Languages in partnership with the Ramakrishna Mission.

The chief minister said Tripura secured the top position among states and union territories in both phases of the Deregulation and Compliance Reduction initiative.

He further informed the council that the state attracted investment proposals worth more than Rs 30,000 crore during the past year, while projects exceeding Rs 8,000 crore have already been grounded. He said major companies, including Bharti Airtel, are setting up facilities in the state, including a data centre in Agartala.

Dr Saha also highlighted initiatives in tourism, digital governance and startup promotion, including the development of the Mata Tripura Sundari Tourism Circuit, the Buddhist Circuit, the State Innovation Mission and T-NEST.
