Agartala: As many as 340 schools with a cumulative enrollment of 6,492 students in Tripura have only one teacher posted there for conducting classes, says a report published by the Ministry of Education. The UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) report for the year 2024-2025 published in August this year also disclosed that the state has no school with zero enrollment which appears as an optimistic indication.
The data precisely elaborated that Tripura with Pupil Teachers Ratio of 18 recorded an average enrollment of 140 students per school. For schools with single teachers, the number of average enrolment stands at a little over 20, the data reveals.
The data also lays emphasis on the infrastructure available in the schools. Tripura with a total strength of 4,943 schools has all its school premises electrified. More than 97 percent of the schools have separate toilet facilities for the students.
In 2024-25, the state recorded a total enrolment of 6,90,084 pupils. Out of the total enrolment, 4,88,370 students are being taught in 4,187 government schools. 28,103 students got enrolled in 42 government aided schools while 12,067 students enrolled in other schools operating in the state. According to the UDISE data, other schools include Kendriya Vidyalayas, Ekalavya Model Residential School, Navodaya Schools etc. The remaining 1,61,544 students got enrolled in 485 privately managed schools which indicates the rising propensity among the parents to have their children enrolled in private schools.
It also shows how the load of students are rising substantially among the private schools which are fewer in number. A rough calculation shows that the average number of students in private schools stands at 333 which is more than twice of the average enrollment in all schools of the state.
The data pinpoints that the government schools are far behind in recruitment of teachers compared to private schools. In 4,187 government schools, 27,601 teachers are posted while in 485 government schools, the number of teachers stands at 8,195. Against an average of 7 teachers in government schools, the private schools secured an average of more than 16 teachers.
On the infrastructure, Tripura schools are well equipped with basic infrastructure but in terms of modern infrastructure, the government schools are yet to tread a long path. The study finds that only 41 percent of schools have Internet facilities. A total of 186 schools could integrate rain water harvesting systems within its premises and solar panels are installed in only 221 schools which only accounts for only 3 percent and 4 percent of the total schools respectively.

On the other hand, 3,289 schools in Tripura have computer classes for students. In private schools 85 percent of schools have computer classes for students. Science labs are available in 428 schools out of 1,229 schools which are of secondary level.
The drop out rate is found to be highest in the secondary level with 8.80 percent. In Middle schools level, it stands at 3.20 percent and in foundational level, the drop out rate is capped at 1.30 percent.
