Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday said that he had placed a proposal before the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission to grant Government of Tripura access to water of river Titas flowing very close to Agartala city to permanently end drinking water woes of the state capital.
According to the Chief Minister, if Tripura can access river Titas for drinking water, dependence on undergoing water shall reduce substantially.
“I have placed a proposal before the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner to allow us to lift water from Titas river which is flowing very close to Narasingarh, an outskirts area of Agartala city. This water can be used for providing drinking water to the entire Agartala city,” Dr Saha said.
He said that if the Bangladesh government shows a positive sign to the proposal, he would take up the matter with the Centre.
“It is just a proposal from my end. If this project is approved and gets implemented, the city dwellers will get major relief in the form of clean drinking water instead of iron content heavy water,” said Dr Saha.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the occupancy certificate distribution event between flat owners of newly constructed township projects in his own constituency.
The Chief Minister also revealed that a proper water sewage treatment plant would be established at Indo-Bangla borders along Agartala city to get rid of the long standing grievance of Bangladesh.
“I have been told that a lot of people in the Bangladesh side had been suffering from skin diseases due to untreated sewage water entering Bangladesh from Agartala city through Kalapani and Katakhal channels. It is our responsibility to ensure that no one is harmed for us,” he added.
According Dr Saha, Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner to Agartala met him and detailed about the problems faced by a good number of people on the Bangladeshi side.
