Agartala: 50-year-old Babul Datta from Tripura poisoned himself to death after the name of his son’s girlfriend got embroiled in the sensational club secretary murder case.

Susmita Sarkar, who is picked up by the police as one of the prime accused persons in the gruesome killing of Bharat Ratna Sangha Club Secretary Durga Prasanna Deb is the girlfriend of Datta’s son.

According to the family members of the deceased, the boy who is involved in the love affair with Susmita has left the country to work abroad.

Datta consumed poison last Tuesday. He was immediately shifted to hospital on the same day but eventually breathed his last on Thursday.

“Two police officials in plain clothes escorted Susmita’s sister and her mother to our house. They have requested us to give them shelter in our house. My father refused to entertain their request as none of our family members were eager to get linked with the incident. After my father’s gentle refusal, the cops returned two days after and to some extent exerted pressure on my father to let them stay here,” daughter of the deceased told media persons.

On being asked as to how they are in contact with Susmita, she said, “Susmita was the girlfriend of my brother. She used to visit our house frequently. Since my brother is now staying abroad for work, the frequency of her visit has reduced drastically but she is quite familiar with all of us.”

She also mentioned that the police officials snatched the mobile phone of her father without showing any valid reason.

“None of our family members have ever been in touch with the people who are reportedly involved in the case. We didn’t even know when Susmita was working with them. Instead of chasing down the real offenders, my father who always lived a dignified life was getting harassed by the police,” she added.

Datta used to live with his family in the West Noabadi area in West Tripura district.
According to the wife of the deceased, her husband was upset with the police investigation and public humiliation he was facing due to their son’s affair with a murder case accused.

“On Tuesday, he lost his cool and consumed poison. He was sweating profusely and acting restless. As we brought him to hospital, we were told that he had consumed poison. Despite efforts from the doctors, his life couldn’t be saved. He died this morning,” said his wife.
